Inspiration

For my ceramic work, I use porcelain and porcelain coloured slips. Sometimes the dishes are thrown on the wheel and sometimes the clay in rolled out and draped over or into a plaster mould to achieve an asymmetrical shape. The texture of the cloth that the clay is rolled out on helps with the decoration – perhaps to emulate the scaliness of fish, a favourite motif. Current paintings and drawings are inspired by working outside in the landscape. I like to work in a way that reflects the aims of painters like Matisse and Dufy, who enjoyed arranging colours on a flat surface. I am not concerned particularly with imitating reality – the picture has to work on its own terms. I like to use accidents. I like paintings that have a strong sense of place or atmosphere, or something mysterious about them.
